6.d. How to use Orient@mento
in rete

®
|
(Careers Information and Guidance on the Web) and the internet for careers information and guidance.
You will see on this page:
Why
use the internet for careers information and guidance
There
are some features which make the internet particularly attractive for those
who have to manage, or wish to put at the disposal of their clients, a
careers information and guidance service:
- The large amount,
the quality and free availability of careers information and guidance
material which it is possible to find on the net.
- The possibility of
being able to offer a careers information and guidance service
irrespective of opening hours, availability of premises, or place of
residence of the users.
- The low cost of
serving the individual user.
There
are also other features that should be considered for an effective
organisation of careers information and guidance services throughout the net.
- The difficulty for
the users of accessing immediately and by themselves the information
which they are seeking.
- Compared to a face
to face interview between client and counsellor interaction is limited
and impersonal.

Orient@mento
in rete (Careers Information
and Guidance on the Web) has been thought up in order to take full advantage of the net's
potential. Its strong points are:
- The high level of
cover: the 40 most important subjects in careers information and
guidance are dealt with in detail.
- The quality of the
linked material: in the search for the best material more than 600 sites
have been examined (see the
list). When necessary ad hoc information has been added.
- The type of links:
in Orient@mento
in rete, the links have
been set up in such a way that instead of connecting to the Home Pages
of the other sites (as is the normal practise), they link directly to
the desired topic in those sites, thereby saving the user time. More
than 400 pages have been linked in this way. However there is, of
course, the option of linking to the Home Pages if desired.
- The display of the
subjects: a user tailored approach is taken in dealing with the various
subjects; the links are integrated in the text; the contents are
immediately accessible without the need for outside assistance.

How
to improve the business of the existing careers information and guidance
agencies using this site
Surfing
in Orient@mento
in rete and in the linked sites
allows the users of the agencies to access autonomously and effectively the
majority of the information which they would normally request from the
careers advisers, making the role of the advisers easier and improving the
quality of the service.
- In order to take
advantage of this possibility it is necessary to equip every agency with
computers connected to the internet and to a printer (an outlay of about
£1200, plus the meagre cost of the telephone bills), to set the browser
at the Home Page of Orient@mento
in rete, and leave the
users to surf freely (print an
introductory page to hang up in the agency).
- Surfing the net is
intuitive; a few minutes explanation is sufficient for the users who
have never surfed before.
- The computers can
also be used to write curriculum vitae and application letters. You may
also publicise Orient@mento
in rete for your clients
who have internet at their disposal themselves (print an
introductory page to hang up in the agency)

How
to transform any public place or place open to the public into a place where
people might go to get information and counselling on careers
For
transforming any public place or place open to the public into a place where
people might go to get careers information and guidance it is sufficient to
have a place open to the public, equipped with a computer linked to the
internet and to a printer, where an agent may be present (for example the
local library, city information office, school classroom), set the browser at
the Home Page of Orient@mento in
rete and let the users surf freely.
- Surfing on the net
is intuitive; a few minutes explanation is all that is necessary for the
clients who have never surfed before.
- In this way it
allows those people, who don't have a computer at their disposal at home
to surf Orient@mento
in rete and the linked
sites thereby collecting the information which they need.
- The computers can
also be used for writing curriculum vitae and application letters.
- You can also
publicise Orient@mento
in rete for your clients
who don't have the internet at their disposal themselves. Print an
introductory page to hang up in the library, school or city information
office.
Orient@mento
in rete is structured in such a
way as to satisfy the most common requests of people who turn to careers
agencies and can be consulted without the need for outside assistance. For
particular requests that cannot be met in the site, it is possible:
- To inquire directly,
through internet (e-mail) to the linked sites in Orient@mento
in rete.
- To draw up an
agreement with a careers agency which has E Mail at its disposal (in
this case, we can suggest some agencies which are prepared to supply
this type of service, contact us)
- To place in the
library, school or city information office a series of publications (see which
they are) which supplement the information accessible in internet.
- It is also possible
to put your own web site in the internet with one or more pages
referring to: training courses and community schools, careers
initiatives, opening hours of public services, etc.
- In order to find
information more easily, we can suggest in our site, without charge, the
organisations which have their own web sites in the internet and those
which have placed a careers service at the disposal of their clients by
following these guidelines. Tell us.
